Mission statement.Consortium is a non-commercial platform focusing on presenting exciting developments in international contemporary art. Founded late 1996, it is centrally located in the former Port of Amsterdam. The initiative employs various formats for its projects, including exhibitions, weekend programs, audio and screening events. Consortium´s space measures 220 sq. metres. In the past ten years many artists, some of whom are now internationally renowned, have shown their work at Consortium at early stages in their careers. Projects have been developed for other organisations in and outside of the Netherlands as well, ranging in size from large institutions to small artist-run organisations. Since 2004, a strong effort has been made to sensibly focus on the fascinating output of artists who integrate sound and/or music in their artistic output. The often amazing results have helped the sound medium to deeply root itself in Consortium´s program. Both newly developed and already existing works are shown in challenging projects including installations, sound, music, live-audio and live-video performances. Consortium aims to help further integrate sound-based art into the visual arts context, and to help dismantle the conservative, artificial barriers that still often separate sound from vision. Many of tomorrows major artists are now active in this field, and they are already producing amazing works in which audio is the main or key element, enriching and broadening the scope of contemporary art.
